BASF and ENGIE have signed a seven-year contract for the supply of biomethane. Under this agreement, ENGIE will supply BASF with 27 to 30 terawatt-hours of biomethane during the contract period.
BASF uses certified biomethane at its sites in Ludwigshafen, Germany, and Antwerp, Belgium, as a sustainable alternative to fossil resources in production. This approach supports the sustainable transformation of the company by reducing the CO2 footprint. The amount of biomethane is allocated to a sales product using a globally recognized biomass balance approach, known as the biomass balance approach.
Through the purchase agreement and the use of biomethane, BASF expands its product portfolio, offering its customers in industries such as automotive, packaging, and detergents products with a reduced Product Carbon Footprint (PCF).
Biomethane is a renewable gas produced by the fermentation of organic waste from households, agriculture, or industry. It significantly reduces greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil resources.
