The AMA Association for Sensor and Measuring Technology (AMA) analysed the economic situation in the second quarter in its latest survey of around 450 members. According to the industry's statements, it recorded a decline in turnover of 3 % in this period compared to the previous quarter.
This means that the industry did not meet its expectations, as it had been expecting a largely stable sales development. Interestingly, a look at the second quarter of 2023 compared to the same period last year shows that the sensor industry was able to increase its turnover by 5 %. In terms of new orders, AMA Association members reported a 5 % decrease in the second quarter of 2023 compared to the previous quarter.
Differences in sales trends between large and smaller companies are evident, with larger companies reporting a greater decline in sales than smaller AMA members. The sales markets in the areas of sensor and measurement technology as well as electrical engineering developed comparatively well. The sales markets in the energy sector and railway technology proved more difficult in the second quarter.
“Our members explain the declining sales in the second quarter as a result of the supply bottlenecks during the Corona pandemic. As supplies became more available, their customers have been filling supply inventories heavily and are now trying to bring them back to normal levels”, explained Thomas Simmons, managing director of the AMA Association. “As a result, sentiment among our members remains positive, and they are already projecting a 3% increase in sales again in the current quarter.”
