As part of a modernization project, the Beckton sewage treatment plant in London will be using variable-speed actuators from AUMA. The new technology is designed to extend the service life of the contactors, reduce maintenance requirements, and enable more efficient process control.
The Beckton Sewage Treatment Works in London has modernized its drive technology. Twelve high-performance SAV actuators from AUMA with variable motor speed are being used. The systems were installed as part of a modernization project and ensure the gentle actuation of large contactors at the outlet of the primary screens. This is intended to both extend the service life of the plant components and make the process flows more reliable and efficient.
Electric actuators with variable speed offer advantages in the automation of large contactors—for example, in wastewater treatment plants, retention basins, or flood protection systems.
The Beckton wastewater treatment plant in the London borough of Newham has been in operation since 1864. Covering an area of more than 100 hectares, it is one of the largest wastewater treatment plants in Europe. The plant is operated by Thames Water, one of the UK’s leading water suppliers.
Variable speed protects existing contactor systems
During the implementation of the project, it was necessary to handle the existing contactor panels as gently as possible. For this reason, AUMA recommended replacing the existing fixed-speed actuators with modern SAV actuators featuring variable motor speed.
With the new actuators, the motor speed can be individually adjusted for each phase of the opening and closing process. Slow start-up and gentle deceleration reduce mechanical stress, which increases the service life of the valves. At the same time, higher speeds can be used for longer travel distances, thereby shortening the actuation times.
In addition, all new SAV actuators feature automatic spindle lubrication. This reduces maintenance requirements and contributes to the longer service life of the entire system.
Modern control technology for future requirements
The actuator control systems use standard parallel control based on 24 V DC commands and 4–20 mA signals for position feedback. In addition, Profibus interfaces have been integrated. Although these are not currently in use, they will enable a future transition to Profibus communication without the need for additional hardware or software modifications.
Upon completion of the work, all twelve contactors were successfully tested and commissioned. The plant’s employees now benefit from more efficient workflows. At the same time, the Beckton wastewater treatment plant considers itself well-prepared technically for future requirements.
