The Swedish company Alfa Laval moved its German-speaking headquarters from Glinde in Schleswig-Holstein to Hamburg's HafenCity on June 1, 2024. This relocation affects around 250 employees, while the sites in Austria and Switzerland remain unchanged.
"It was time to find a location in Germany that better fits our modern, sustainable global company and meets our ambitions: to continue growing, acting sustainably, and being an attractive employer," says Sven Schreiber, Managing Director of Alfa Laval Mid Europe.
The provider in the areas of heat transfer, separation, and fluid handling focuses particularly on sustainability in its new headquarters. The metal processing company Aurubis will use its industrial waste heat for district heating at the new location. Alfa Laval has manufactured special heat exchangers that meet the high demands of design and material. In the second expansion phase of the project, around 20,000 households in HafenCity are to be supplied with district heating from Aurubis' industrial waste heat starting in autumn 2024. This is expected to save up to 100,000 tons of CO2 annually.
"Expression of Our Consistent Development"
Alfa Laval employs approximately 21,300 people worldwide. In 2023, the publicly traded company achieved an annual turnover of 55 billion euros. Under CEO Tom Erixon, the company continues to grow, including in the DACH region. Additionally, Alfa Laval promotes sustainability projects globally through partnerships and campaigns. These include the "Energy Efficiency Movement" and the "Sustainable Cities" campaign. The company’s progress towards zero emissions by 2050 is confirmed by the independent Science Based Targets initiative.
Sven Schreiber states, "Change is the new normal, as they say. For Alfa Laval - which has been around for over 140 years - this motto has always applied. Today, for example, we are researching new fuels for ships and developing heat exchangers that save even more energy. The move to the sustainable and modern Watermark building in HafenCity is an expression of our consistent development."
