The “2024 Net Zero Report” shows the most common obstacles on the path to decarbonisation. Many companies have a strong focus on sustainability, but only a few manage to achieve their climate targets. This is now the fourth annual report from ENGIE Impact, which is based on interviews with more than 500 top decision-makers from leading global companies. It analyses the progress that companies have made in decarbonisation compared to the previous year.
The proportion of companies that classify their sustainability programmes as “extremely” or “significantly successful” has risen significantly from a total of 28% in 2020 to 68%. In addition, half of companies (52%) are already making fundamental changes to their business model in order to achieve their long-term climate targets.
However, only 20 percent of companies state that they have “met or exceeded” their ambitious targets. This shows that most companies still have a lot of work ahead of them. The majority also expect to have to “significantly change” or “completely transform” some of their fundamental business practices. This is the only way to fulfil the long-term commitments to decarbonisation.
“The signals we are getting from our Net Zero Report 2024 study are encouraging. Leaders are ready to make the necessary changes”, says Mathias Lelievre, CEO of ENGIE Impact. “Progress is visible, but we are still a long way from reaching our goal. We have not yet reached the pace that is necessary, we need to move faster. And starting today. It's time for both companies and governments to prioritise implementation.”
