The Ras Azour Independent Water and Power Production project, as well as two other projects all together totalling USD 11 million, have been approved by Saudi Arabia's Saline Water Conversion Corp. (SWCC).
The USD 9 billion Ras Azour project is designed to supply power and water required by Saudi Arabian Mining Co.'s aluminium smelter and phosphate-processing facilities in the area. It is likely to use natural gas instead of oil for its energy requirements. Saudi Arabia requires new investments worth more than USD 50 billion for desalination projects during the next 10 years.
The scale of the Kingdom's IWPP projects has drawn massive financial and investor interest from around the world.
