Gaia Power Tees Valley Ltd has been given the go-ahead for plans to build a GBP 200 million biomass plant at Billingham Reach Industrial Estate in Tees Valley, England.

Planning permission for the 50MW facility has been granted by Stockton Borough Council Planning Committee, although Gaia is still trying to finalise a financial package to get the plant under way.

The plant will burn 280,000tns of recycled wood chippings each year to generate enough energy to power more than 80,000 homes. Gaia claimed that the plant will save about 430,000tns/yr of carbon-dioxide emissions compared to typical coal-, oil- or gas-fired power stations of similar size.
