Standardisation has also brought cultural changes. The switch from monolithic to modular approaches required a radical rethink in the companies. Many had to reorganise their internal processes in order to benefit from the flexibility of MTP. Nevertheless, the success stories showed that the effort was worthwhile. The Merck Electronics Technology Centre, for example, has increased the flexibility and interoperability of its systems with MTP. Thanks to automation software from COPA-DATA and Siemens, the market launch of new products has been accelerated by up to 50 %. Over 300 MTP-enabled modules and 60 Process Orchestration Layer (POL) instances in use speak for themselves. Plug & Produce? More like plug & profit!
And the figures speak for themselves: around 80 % of OEMs that are involved with MTP realise at least one pilot of an MTP-capable PEA. Savings of up to 50 % in time-to-market and 70 % less engineering effort show that MTP is not just a concept, but a real game changer. MTP has proven its worth in the pharmaceutical industry in particular. The industry benefits above all from the increased interoperability and significant risk minimisation in production: the new MTP alarm concept meets the high safety requirements of the pharmaceutical industry and now enables more efficient production.
Ready for the future
The success story of the MTP shows that any innovation requires time, patience and a clear vision. It has been a journey full of challenges, but also full of milestones. Every plugfest, every new guideline and every successful implementation helped to strengthen confidence in the technology. While the industry reaps the benefits today, the pioneers remember the many hurdles that were overcome along the way. From the first Tutzing Symposium in 2009 to the international collaborations - MTP has had a lasting impact on the process industry.
After a decade of standardisation work, MTP is ready to write the next chapter. With MTP 2.0, implementation will be even easier and versioning and release management more efficient. The vision remains: A world in which modularisation becomes a matter of course. Standardisation has done its homework - now it is up to the industry to pick up the ball. The next phase of the modular revolution awaits. The future is modular. Are you ready?
